St Issell's House
Every pub has a story. Ours is built into the walls.
A house tied to the harbour
The Captains Table occupies St Issell's House, on the harbour front in the heart of Saundersfoot. The house is linked to the Vickerman family, who were closely involved in the Victorian development of Saundersfoot — an era when the village grew around its harbour, the anthracite coal trade, and the first waves of coastal tourism.
Saundersfoot's harbour was built in the 1820s and 1830s to ship coal from the local collieries; the tramways that carried it along the shore became today's much-loved walking route through the tunnels towards Wisemans Bridge. As the coal trade faded, the harbour turned to fishing and leisure, and Saundersfoot became the seaside village visitors know now.
Eating and drinking in St Issell's House puts you inside that story — a building that has watched the harbour change trades from coal to boats to holidaymakers.
